‘Needed crutches’ Kate Garraway warns Fred Sirieix ahead of Strictly Christmas special

Kate Garraway, Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid appeared on a pre-recorded Christmas Day special of Good Morning Britain. During the festive instalment, the ITV hosts chatted with First Dates star Fred Sirieix about competing in the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special. Fred, 49, told the presenters he would be performing the “absolutely exhausting” Quickstep before Kate, 54, warned him that dance left her needing crutches.

The star explained: “We are going to be dancing the Quickstep. I am no dancer by any stretch of the imagination you know I’ve got to work on my timing, my form, everything.

“The Quickstep – it’s in the name – it is so fast and it’s incredible.

“I love boxing as you know and I go and train every day and when I train I go through 12 rounds.

“When I trained with Dianne it’s like 36 rounds in one session and it’s absolutely exhausting.”

Ben chimed in: “I’d imagine your boxing is going to be so much better because of the Quickstep.”

The keen boxer replied: “It’s true, in boxing you actually train to have your head down and your chin down and in ballroom dancing, you have to be up and your head turns to the side.

“So it’s a completely different routine, totally different.”

Kate, who appeared in the fifth series of Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with professional dancer Anton du Beke, agreed with Fred and issued a warning about the Quickstep.

She told Fred: “The Quickstep was the dance which left me on crutches, I got tendinitis.

“So you have done well to still be walking, it’s very bouncy, isn’t it? It’s just bouncing all the time.”

Fred replied: “I am telling you, I feel like I am competing in the Olympics.”

He then revealed he is doing the dance routine in a Christmas turkey outfit has been challenging.

Fred joked: “I had no choice, Dianne decided everything. It’s entertainment, but it’s serious.”

The First Dates star faces competition for the Glitterball trophy against; Mel Giedroyc, Adrian Chiles, Moira Stuart, Anne-Marie and Jay Blades.

Each couple will perform in front of judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke, Shirley Ballas, and the voting audience.

Strictly Come Dancing airs Christmas Day at 5.10pm on BBC One.
