Production on the final episodes of NCIS season 17 were delayed by the outbreak of coronavirus. During the unexpected hiatus, fans of the wildly popular CBS procedural have called for the return of a major character who hasn’t been seen in over a decade.

Cybersecurity Timothy McGee (played by Sean Murray) has been a long-standing member of the NCIS cast since it began in 2003.

Although the series is known for delving into the characters’ family lives, McGee’s sister Sarah (Troian Bellisario) has been conspicuously absent for over a decade.

Sarah was never part of the NCIS team, but she played a prominent part in the season four episode Twisted Sister.

McGee, Team Leader Gibbs (Mark Harmon) help Sarah out when she becomes the suspect in a murder investigation.

However, Sarah hasn’t been seen since her season four appearance marked her last for the series, way back in 2006.

Some viewers were confused when such a close member of McGee’s family failed to make any subsequent appearances in later seasons.

Sarah was absent when her father died, and assumedly declined an invitation to her brother’s wedding to Delilah Fielding (Margo Harshman).

Now McGee is happily married with children, fans have been eager to see Sarah’s take on his new lease of life.

Entertainment outlet CarterMatt advocated for Sarah’s return in a recent article.

They said: “Is it possible we could see Sarah return again? Potentially, but it would probably require a potentially interesting story.

“There’s a lot still to explore with the McGee siblings, and it could be a chance for some humor combined with a little bit of heart.”

Although Troian Bellisario was a relatively unknown actress when she guest starred on NCIS, her later career has made her much more well-known.

After NCIS, Bellisario was cast as lead role Spencer Hastings for popular CW series Pretty Little Liars, and went on to make guest spots in Suits.

Sadly, the demanding schedule for the long-running crime drama most likely made it impossible for the actress to return to NCIS.

However, now Pretty Little Liars has come to an end, viewers have been speculating if Sarah McGee could make a surprise return in season 18.

CarterMatt added: “She’s also a much bigger star now than she was way back when she played Sarah McGee; earlier this year, she was cast in a new pilot entitled Ways and Means starring Patrick Dempsey.”

Now a far more major TV star, a guest spot from Bellisario would make for exciting viewing, especially after the most recent episode featured Back to the Future’s Christopher Lloyd.

Some fans took to Twitter to comment on the likelihood of Sarah McGee making another appearance.

One viewer agreed it could be a good chance to explore her brother’s personal life and said: “McGee needs more family around.”

Although another fan added: “I don’t think Troian will ever come back. If they change the actress his sister could come back to the show.”

NCIS season 17 is available to stream on CBS All Access.
