Lethal Weapon poised to replace leading man Clayne Crawford if there is a season 3

Martin Riggs could look very different if Lethal Weapon ends up getting a third season.

The on-set turmoil on Fox’s adaptation of the buddy copy films continues, with TVLine reporting that the network and production company WBTV are actively looking to recast Clayne Crawford’s role as Riggs.

The news outlet says that the fate of Lethal Weapon will largely hinge on whether a suitable replacement for Crawford can be found in the next few days.

Warner Bros declined to comment on the recasting reports when contacted by Digital Spy. We have also reached out to Clayne Crawford’s representatives.

Crawford appeared to make light of his plight several hours after news broke of his possible sacking, tweeting: “Wait, wait, wait……you can’t fire me on my day off!”

Last month, the actor responded to talk of on-set strife by confirming that he’d been reprimanded twice by show bosses, including once after an actor was inadvertently struck by a piece of equipment during an episode that Crawford directed.

“I take responsibility for the incident,” he wrote in a lengthy statement.

Crawford also publicly apologised to his co-workers, conceding that his disciplinary issues were potentially putting the future of Lethal Weapon — and thus the jobs of dozens — at risk.

“I absolutely love, respect and care for my crew and cast, and would never intentionally jeopardize so many jobs,” he insisted.

“Moreover, I love the process of making film and television. I appreciate and respect the work of everyone involved. It takes a village.”

Crawford plays the Mel Gibson role in the TV spin-off as hot-shot cop Martin Riggs, with Damon Wayans replacing Danny Glover as Riggs’ gruff partner Roger Murtaugh.

For now, Lethal Weapon continues tonight (May 8) on Fox in the US. ITV airs the series in the UK.
