Law and Order saw many of its most popular characters leave at some point during the show’s run, one of which was actor Chris Noth. The 66-year-old has become known as Big in Sex and The City but before this, he was Detective Mike Logan in the NBC series. Here’s everything we know about why the actor left the police procedural behind.

Why did Mike Logan actor Chris Noth really leave Law and Order?

Actor Noth was an original star in Law and Order, having been in the series since the pilot.

He was the charming young detective who had plenty of swagger and enthusiasm when it came to putting the bad guys behind bars.

Logan was a fan-favourite for five years and helped to make the show an international success.

Unfortunately, he was only in the series for the first five seasons before making his exit.

At the end of season five, Detective Logan punched a politician who was found not guilty following a trial for murder.

Because of this, Logan was forcibly transferred from Manhattan to a unit at Staten Island.

This wasn’t the end of the character though as Logan then appeared in the spin-off series Law and Order: Criminal Intent in 2005.

He was a recurring character in the drama for a few years before leaving for good this time in 2008.

Logan had to be written out of Law and Order, sadly, because it was time for Noth to leave.

According to Associated Press, producer Dick Wolf said scheduled contract negotiations were taking place with Noth being entitled to a salary increase if he was to stay for series six.

However, Wolf said it would have been “impossible to grant” Noth the raise.

In response, head of Noth’s management team Dolores Robinson said at the time: “He’s [Noth] really sorry that they couldn’t get it together, but he’s had five great years, and his feeling is that it’s time to move on.”

Of course, this was far from the end of Noth’s acting career as he went on to star in the CBS drama The Good Wife in 2008.

But his biggest role came before this in the shape of Mr Big in HBO’s Sex and the City.

He was the on-off love interest of Carrie Bradshaw, portrayed by none other than Sarah Jessica Parker.

Noth was in the comedy-drama for six years and later reprised the role for the film and the sequel.

Law and Order was on for two decades but was cancelled in 2010.

Nevertheless, the series still lives on with its spin-off series Special Victims Unit and Organised Crime.

Season 23 of SVU will premiere on Thursday, September 23 with a two-hour special.

Law and Order is available to watch on NBC.
