French President Emannuel Macron is in the United States for Trump’s first official state dinner as host.
American has gotten so used to the angry and aggressive Donald Trump from the campaign trail and even while in the White House, that it’s a little startling to see this softer side of him as French President Emannuel Macron is in Washington for the Trumps’ first state visit.
In fact, the late-night hosts can’t get over how happy and affectionate and a little handsy and grabby Trump is with Macron.
It’s like a bromance where one bro is way more into it than the other, but the other bro is too polite to say anything, so he just kind of goes along with it. After all, Macron knows he’s only here for a few days and then he can jet back to his own country and have a whole ocean between him and Trump’s hands.
Macron has been dubbed "The Trump Whisperer" because he’s one of the few foreign leaders who has learned how to "handle" Trump, and the world stage is very concerned about the United States pulling out of the Iran deal. Hell, Macron may be one of the few people on the planet who’s figured this out. We’re not sure anyone in this country knows how to do it. Maybe Sean Hannity?
"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert"
President Macron brought a gift along with him from France for the Trumps. It was a tree, and the two men got sweaty together planting it at the White House Tuesday afternoon. "All that shovelling is great practice for when Trump has to hide Michael Cohen’s body," Colbert joked after seeing the footage.
Another moment that stood out was when the two presidents and their wives were at a press conference and Trump went in for a kiss with Melania. She had on an extremely wide-brimmed white hat and did nothing to help him seal that deal. "Trump goes for the kiss and oooh! Saved by the hat!" the CBS late-night host said while providing play-by-play for the scene. "That is more than a hat, that is a defensive perimeter. Their deal is either she gets to wear the hat or Trump has to wear a cone."
Other footage from that day showed Trump’s hand madly fumbling around hers trying to get her to hold hands with him, but it was a no-go. Luckily, he had Macron’s hand to hold and boy did he!
"Late Night with Seth Meyers"
All of the late-night hosts couldn’t believe when Trump brushed a piece of dandruff off of Macron’s shoulder, announcing what it was and saying he did it so Macron would be "perfect." Meyers showed the clip and then said, "Macron returned the favor by putting a bag over Trump’s head."
Meyers couldn’t help but notice the coldness on display between Donald and Melania, either. "President Trump said that his great relationship with French President Emannuel Macron was not fake news, but added that his fake relationship with Melania Trump was not great news," he said, showing a picture of the (un)happy couple.
He then took it to a very dark place, talking about Melania’s preparations for the Trump White House’s first dinner. He imagined her looking at the place settings and wondering, "Which fork do I use to kill myself?"
"Jimmy Kimmel Live"
Kimmel loved Melania’s hat trick as well, saying, "Can’t quite get under the brim. That’s her special Donald-proof sombrero." He then showed the president getting all handsy and physical with Macron at that same press conference. "Macron is like, ‘Melania can I borrow your hat for a minute?’" Kimmel joked.
"He gave him the full Stormy Daniels there," Kimmel said of Trump’s near-constant manhandling of the foreign dignitary.
And Kimmel couldn’t let the dandruff moment go, either. "That’s really what orangutans do," he explained. "They groom each other." They’re also orange … we see what you did there, Jimmy!
"The Late Late Show with James Corden"
James Corden could not believe that Donald Trump told the whole world that Macron had a piece of dandruff on his shoulder and brushed it off. "You don’t say that to someone’s face," he said. "You say it behind their back and then all have a good laugh about it."
He joked that after Trump did Macron that dandruff favor, "it got even more awkward when Macron tried to wipe off whatever that is all over Donald Trump’s face."
Corden admitted he appreciated seeing this softer side of Trump, even if it was a little over-the-top and weird. "It is nice seeing Trump passive aggressive rather than his normal aggressive aggressive," he remarked.
"The Daily Show with Trevor Noah"
After watching how Macron stayed poised and professional and smiling through all of Trump’s bizarre antics, Trevor Noah dubbed him, "the Belle to Trump’s Beast."
He then just had to show his audience footage of Trump showing Macron and the First Ladies around the Oval Office, even pointing out specifically the phone where he calls Macron. For his part, Macron certainly sounded like he was very interested in this state-of-the-art technology.
"Macron is acting the way a grownup doe when a kid shows them around their playroom," Noah laughed. "He’s like, ‘Wow Donald, the phone. Can you talk to people on it?’"
