Actress Kristen Bell is known for being transparent. With sharing details from her marriage to actor Dax Shepard and her highs and lows of parenting her two daughters Lincoln and Delta, Bell has become a fan favorite by being so authentic.
The star from The Good Place and the highly anticipated film Frozen 2 is now revealing that there are certain food items that she deems as necessary in her diet.
A definite distaste
Bell shared a video on her YouTube series Hot Ones earlier this year, where she and her husband tried eating a chocolate bar that contained the Black Reaper pepper, which is currently known as the spiciest pepper in the world. Bell told her viewers that they were participating in the Choco Challenge to support a charity close to their hearts.
“The Choco Challenge benefited the Prostate Cancer Foundation,” Bell shared on the YouTube series. “My husband’s a Prostate Cancer Foundation ambassador. He said they sent us some spicy chocolate and we’re gonna eat it. It’s sort of like the Ice Bucket Challenge – you know, inspire other people to eat it and then make a funny video.”
While they were clearly jazzed to try the chocolate, the excitement didn’t last due to the extreme spiciness of the sweet treat. Though afterward, they both clearly could not handle how spicy it was.
Bell was emphatic on how difficult the challenge was, saying, “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” She also commented that she would rather go through childbirth than eat the product again. “If I had the choice to do [the Choco Challenge] all over again or go through labor all over again, I’d choose labor,” Bell said.
A dietary must-have
One item on Bell’s list of necessary food items includes something that is usually skimmed from Hollywood diets. While she maintains a vegetarian plan, she always incorporates carbohydrates in her daily meals to help her stay on track in her work. “I have to eat carbs because I have to memorize 11 pages of dialogue, and I can’t do that eating spinach and chicken,” she told Women’s Health, adding that she has a bagel everyday for a snack.
Though she allows herself some foods considered forbidden in showbiz, Bell stays mindful of maintaining balance. “I’m not super restrictive. If they make au gratin potatoes, I’m going to have some, but I am mindful of the portion I take,” she said. “I find that through conscious eating, I’m able to have all the rewards and also maintain a healthy, steady diet.”
Despite the celebrity status that she and her husband both have, Bell refuses to hire anyone to prepare their males. “I get too much joy out of cooking,” she said. “I wouldn’t actually feel comfortable coming home and having a meal served to me.”
Mental health wellness
Bell is also very open about her struggles with anxiety and depression, which she has dealt with since she was 18. In the past, she has been reluctant about sharing this part of her life. “I realized that this is the shame that prevents people from talking about it. I immediately felt irresponsible, because I do care about depression not being taboo, yet I present this bubbly, outgoing girl who seemingly gets through life with a smile on her face, and I’d never discussed that some days, I don’t,” Bell revealed.

The Frozen 2 actress takes a daily antidepressant and occasionally goes to therapy to manage her depression and anxiety, but mostly relies on her partnership with Shepard since they have an open dialogue about dealing with those battles when they arise. Bell told Women’s Health that the dark days that once would make it hard for her to get out of bed don’t happen as often now. When they do, she keeps going.
“You just have to do the next right thing. You just stand up. That’s the next right thing. Then you brush your teeth. That’s the next right thing. It’s very one-step-at-a-time,” Bell said.
