Batman’s arch-nemesis is getting his own solo movie this October and if the first trailer was anything to go by, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is looking a far-cry from Suicide Squad and Justice League in the best way possible. Certainly, Joker appears to be setting itself up for awards season with its traumatic themes over comic book action set pieces. Completely separate to the Jared Leto incarnation, it seems Warner Bros are taking DC back to the similar feel of Christopher Nolan’s real-worldly Dark Knight trilogy. Now the first reaction from a screening of Joker has been shared on Twitter.
ViewerAnon writes: “Wanted to chew on this for a couple hours before saying anything: JOKER screened tonight.
“It’s a movie that is casual in its nastiness, a series of continual punches to the gut.
“If you’re into that sort of thing, you’ll love it. If not… [I am].

By the sounds of it, Joker is going to be a pretty brutal 15-certificate outing and not for the fainthearted.
And by adding that Phoenix’s performance is “on fire”, perhaps the star has a chance at the Best Actor Oscar next year.
A period piece, Joker is set in the early 1980s and sees Phoenix play a failed stand-up comedian called Arthur Fleck.
The film’s premise reads: “In 1981, a failed stand-up comedian, disregarded by his society, turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City.”

The synopsis continues: “[Joker] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.”
Directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips, Joker was co-written by The Fighter’s Scott Silver.
The film also stars Deadpool 2’s Zadie Beetz and Robert De Niro as a talk show host.
Joker will be released in UK cinemas on October 4, 2019.
