Try as it might, it appears the public outpouring of support for Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn will have no bearing on Disney’s decision to dismiss him.
According to a report in Variety, it is unlikely that Disney will reverse the decision it made last month – and that’s even with the Guardians cast’s backing in mind.
Earlier this week, the entire cast of the Guardians series pledged their “full support” for James, with Chris Pratt taking the joint statement a step further and calling directly for his reinstatement as director of Volume 3.
Despite the pressure on Disney to reconsider its decision to fire the director, it’s believed that the involvement of Disney Studios chief Alan Horn and CEO Bob Iger in the dismissal will override any potential internal support.
Disney officially dropped James earlier this month, after a number of controversial old tweets surfaced in which the director joked about subjects such as paedophilia and rape.
The company confirmed it had “severed” its relationship with James, calling the comments made “indefensible and inconsistent” with its values.
James has addressed the sacking, both on Twitter and in a subsequent statement, apologising for his past behaviour and crude jokes, and insisting he had changed.
James’ brother Sean, who also stars in the Guardians movies, recently suggested that there had been “a lot of lies” circulating about his brother. “It’s mostly a lot of just people trying to destroy his character,” he said.
