The Walking Dead is about to return for the last time as season 11 will drop on August 22 on AMC. The season promises to answer fans’ most burning questions, wrapping the show up with a satisfying conclusion. A lot could happen in the new season, with just a few episodes to tell it all in.
How many episodes are in season 11?
After more than a decade on screens, The Walking Dead is coming to a final close later this month.
While disappointing for fans, there is still plenty of story to tell, with The Walking Dead universe more expansive than ever.
The show is going out strong, with season 11 consisting of 24 episodes – the longest season yet for the series.
Traditionally, each season has contained 16 episodes, but that changed when season 10 received 22.
With 24 episodes, AMC can give the show the detailed and explosive conclusion fans have been hoping for.
As for what will happen in the new season, that remains to be seen as the trailers have revealed little.
However, speaking to TVLine, Daryl Dixon star Norman Reedus did reveal just how different the final season will be.
Reedus explained: “It’s very surreal, every season feels like a different show in a certain sense, but this season, it’s a whole new backdrop, a whole new colour palette, a whole new attitude.”
It is clear that the scale of the season is expanding, with the Commonwealth and the Reapers set to be the primary antagonists this time around.
At the end of season 10, Commonwealth soldiers clad in white armour made an appearance, offering a stark visual contrast to anything seen in the series previously.
With them comes some new stars joining the cast, each playing some important roles for the final chapter.
Leading the newcomers is Pamala Milton (played by Laila Robins). In the Robert Kirkman comics, Pamala is the Governor of the Commonwealth.
Joining her is Mercer (Michael James Shaw), a high-tech officer within the Commonwealth in charge of many of the soldiers.
Next up is Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton), a bookkeeper in the Commonwealth keeping track of everything going on behind the scenes.
How the survivors interact with these three characters remains to be seen, though it’s not clear if they’ll prove to be friends or foes.
There is also hope that Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) will make an appearance following his exit during season nine.
As the fan-favourite character was never killed off, fans have been waiting for his seemingly inevitable return.
Season 11 will be the last chance for him to do that, but that doesn’t been he won’t come back in another project.
A Rick Grimes movie is in development, expected to release either 2023 or 2024, though since its announcement there have been few updates on the project.
With 24 episodes to play with, The Walking Dead showrunners will no doubt have plenty of surprises in store before the finale comes to a close.
The Walking Dead season 11 premieres August 22 on AMC in the USA. The UK release date is August 23 on Star on Disney Plus.
