Garrett Randall (played by Will Patton) has proven to be a mysterious character in Yellowstone so far. When he was first introduced in the third season, he came onto the scene with some kind of a connection to Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley). His relation to the outcast Dutton was revealed in episode seven of the third run, and season four has seen the character explored further in the Paramount Network show.
How is Garrett Randall related to Jamie Dutton?
Family drama has always been at the heart of Yellowstone, and when it comes to Jamie, it is never a simple story.
In season three, it was revealed that Jamie is the adopted son of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), complicating his relationship with the family further.
This is when Garrett first entered the scene, as Jamie tracked down his biological father.
After Garrett revealed he’d been in prison for most of Jamie’s life for killing his biological mother, Jamie struggled to comprehend the brutality of his true lineage.
However, over the course of the next few episodes, the two started to bond, revealing they had more in common than it first appeared.
Garrett revealed to Jamie that he is an ex-con and recently was released from prison after 30 years behind bars.
He was imprisoned for the murder of his wife and Jamie’s mother, Phyllis, who he killed after coming home one day and finding she was being unfaithful to him.
The Duttons and Randalls were friends, with John knowing Phyllis before she married Garrett.
In season three, John admitted to Jamie: “When he married the woman who gave birth to you, we begged her not to do it because we knew.
“But I guess she thought she could save him. I don’t know how to explain the chemistry of attraction, the thing that drives us to kill ourselves.”
Garrett tried to justify his actions to his son, telling Jamie his mother was a drug addict and was negligent to him.
He said that he killed her to look out for Jamie as he wanted to protect him from Phyllis.
While Jamie and Garrett ended the season with a mutual understanding and the beginnings of a genuine connection, season four could be upending that.
At the end of season three, the Duttons were attacked, with John and Kayce (Luke Grimes) shot and Beth (Kelly Reilly) caught in an office bomb attack.
The biggest question hovering over season four is who was responsible for the assault.
In episode four of season four, Jamie found evidence that Garrett was the old cellmate of Riggins (Bruno Amato), the man that attacked John.
If Garrett is connected to the Dutton family hit in any way, it will shake the foundations of their relationship.
Of course, Yellowstone is known for its misdirection, with nothing ever as it seems at first glance.
Riggins is yet to make an actual appearance in the show, only being seen in the file Jamie discovered.
Riggins looks set to make an appearance soon, with his connection to Garrett sure to follow suit.
Yellowstone season 4 continues November 28 on the Paramount Network in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
