The Crown season five will be airing on Netflix and the series has been created by Peter Morgan. The fifth outing will continue to follow Queen Elizabeth II (played by Imelda Staunton) and her family during the 1990s. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about when the next instalment is likely to come out.

Has season 5 of The Crown been delayed?

The Crown season five will give insight into the Royal Family’s turbulent times during the early 90s.

Actress Staunton will take over from Olivia Colman as the Queen, and she will witness marriage breakdowns and a catastrophic fire at Windsor Castle.

Reports have also suggested the famous Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) interview with the BBC could be covered this season.

A new cast will replace the season four stars, with Claudia Harrison as Princess Anne and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.

Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip, with Dominic West taking over as Prince Charles.

Season four saw renowned actress Gillian Anderson play the role of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Whereas season five will welcome Jonny Lee Miller as the new Prime Minister, John Major.

As for whether the next instalment has been delayed, production began in July 2021.

Filming has been taking place at Elstree Studios, north of London, and coronavirus protocols have been in place.

As filming has only just started, season five is unlikely to be released until 2022.

Financerewind.com said the series has seen some delays in July due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Back in November 2020, Cheatsheet.com reported that the production crew were taking an “extensive break”.

Deadline said the year break in filming between the end of season four and the start of season five was built into the series’s production schedule and was not related to the pandemic.

With this in mind, the delay was always on the cards, with the pandemic only having a small impact on production.

The official Instagram account has been sharing updates from filming, including first-look images of West as Prince Charles.

At the end of July 2021, they shared an image of Staunton as the Queen and fans went wild.

One said: “Hair and wardrobe on point,” whereas another said: “She’s perfect I cannot believe it.”

A third fan added: “She’ll totally nail this role.” The actress has opened up about taking on such an important role.

She spoke on This Morning about taking her predecessor Colman’s advice on playing the Queen.

She said: “There’s pressure from every angle. I’m following two extraordinary actresses but I’m also following one extraordinary human being.

“Because she’s so much in a lot of our lives and we know how she looks and how she sounds, of course, I have to be like her as much as I can.

“But as well I have to tell a story and Peter Morgan’s job is to do her backstage life, that’s where his writing comes in.”

She said she was going to watch Colman intently when she appeared in the role in the fourth season.

Colman has been nominated for numerous awards for her performance, including a Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.

The Crown seasons 1-4 are on Netflix now.
