Australian comedian Sarah Kendall will soon be back on screens with the second series of her hit comedy drama Frayed. Set in the late 80s, the Sky One show follows the adventures of a wealthy London housewife who is forced to return to her hometown of Newcastle, Australia. Sarah plays the lead role of Sammy Cooper in the series and donned a range of quirky period costumes, some of which were inspired by the late royal Princess Diana.

Chatting exclusively to, Sarah shared details of the costumes used in the comedy series.

She revealed some of the outfits were made from scratch and based on the looks of famous figures from the 80s.

“There was one outfit that was based on when Princess Diana took part in an athletics day when the boys were really young,” Sarah revealed.

She continued: “It was the outfit from the sprint and then they went, ‘We’ve found a pattern and we’re going to base this outfit on that’.

“So, Princess Diana was one of the mood boards for the outfits.

“Sammy she can’t afford Princess Diana but Sammy would absolutely go, ‘What is Princess Diana wearing? I’m going to buy whatever the cheap knockoff of that look is’.

“A lot of it was, ‘What was Princess Diana getting around in?’” she added.

Sarah explained that not all the costumes were made from scratch as many were real vintage outfits.

She said: “We did all the costume fittings before we started filming, so you have a day where you go in and you’re just in wardrobe for the entire day.

“They’re like, ‘Okay, we’ll put that in that episode. You’ll be wearing that for that plotline’.

“Each outfit that they brought up. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’” Sarah laughed.

However, the comedian noted that the Frayed costume department were careful not to go over the top with “parody” style 80s looks.

Sarah commented: “We didn’t want to lean in too heavy on silly outfits.

“You want it to look like the 80s, you don’t want it to look like an 80s parody.

“As soon as it looks like an 80s parody it sort of treads on the jokes, it treads on the emotions, you know, treads on the reality of it.

“So, too much hyper colour and bumbags… Not everybody was getting around wearing that,” she remarked.

Teasing what’s in store for her character in season two of Frayed, Sarah revealed she’ll be in trouble with the law.

The comedian said: “The end of season one ends with an accidental killing.

“Then season two is pretty much Sammy trying to evade all responsibility for that and it’s a bit of a cat and mouse with the cops,” she revealed.

Frayed series two returns to Sky Max and streaming service NOW from Wednesday 23 February.
