Emmerdale villain Meena Jutla (played by Paige Sandhu) is currently away in Ibiza after her niece Aisha (Shila Iqbal) had a nasty accident that has left her in a coma. However, in her absence, more drama hit the Dales after David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) was shot by Russ Posner (Rob Jarvis) in a bid to save Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins). It won’t be long before Meena makes her dramatic return to the village, although will she have her sights set on Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen) after her murderous ways are finally exposed?
The theory comes after ITV bosses announced Elizabeth would be leaving the soap after 20 years.
The actress made her first appearance on the ITV soap in 1999, and she has continued to work on the show in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
Elizabeth made her debut on the village-based soap as the mother of established character, Bernice Blackstock (played by Samatha Giles) 22 years ago.
With her character’s daughter having returned to the weeknight serial drama in recent months following the news Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) was pregnant, the actress’ departure will coincide with the arrival of her great-grandchild.
Elizabeth has decided to retire from all professional work, which is why she will be leaving Emmerdale.
Discussing her reason for wanting to leave, Elizabeth said: “For the past 22 years I have loved playing Diane Sugden – she’s kind, reliable and fiercely loyal.
“However, I now feel the time has come to say goodbye. Emmerdale will always remain special to me. I’ve been treated with respect and kindness.
“And I’ve had the very best friends and colleagues, both past and present. I’ll miss everyone dearly.”
Managing Director of Continuing Drama and Head of ITV in the North, John Whiston, wished Elizabeth well for the future.
He said “For 22 years, Liz has shone through the screen and into our living rooms as the natural heart and centre of the Sugden family.
“It’s a role she has made so totally her own, bringing compassion, humour and credibility to her portrayal of Diane.
“Whenever she’s on-screen, as a viewer, you just let out a contented sigh and say to yourself ‘The Queen is on her throne, and all is well with the world’.”

“And off-screen, you don’t get to stay in a soap that long unless you are a truly professional actor and really, really lovely person. Liz is both,” he concluded.
Despite bosses confirming Diane won’t be killed off, fans seem to have other ideas and believe the resident will be evil Meena’s next target.
In scenes that aired earlier this week, Victoria confessed her true feelings for David.
And despite him feeling the same way, he told her he was staying with Meena and that he didn’t love her.
Diane has watched from afar as Victoria and David have fallen for each other, and it will only be a matter of time before the evil nurse finds out everything.
However, could Diane get caught in Meena’s crossfire and unexpectedly become her next victim while trying to protect Victoria?
Taking to social media to share their own theories, @Teamdoctors22 penned: “Can’t believe Diane’s leaving @emmerdale proper soap legend. Hope they don’t kill her off! #Emmerdale.” (sic)

Bernadine added: “My money is now on Meena killing Diane one way or another in the Big Week. What do you reckon?” (sic)
Eli predicted: “I did wonder if we were going to be saying goodbye to Diane, what with the whole dating thing and not that I think they would, but I hope she isn’t killed off.”
While Zoe tweeted: “Just found out Diane is leaving #Emmerdale so think it’d be a safe bet that she’s going to d*e in the big October week stunt week.” (sic)
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV.
