EastEnders likes to keep fans on their toes and continued to do so when Bernadette Taylor (played by Clair Norris) agreed to be the surrogate for Rainie (Tanya Franks) and Stuart Highway (Ricky Champ). The BBC One soap has shown how desperate the couple is to have a baby of their own and Bernie seems to be the final chance at starting a family. But Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) has sadly put a spanner in the works for the funeral undertakers.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from EastEnders.

Rainie has been desperate to get Abi Branning back after Max Branning (Jake Wood) ran off with her.

She correctly believes Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) gave birth to Max’s daughter Annie and is trying to pass her off as Mick’s little girl instead.

In order to try and get Max to bring Abi home, Rainie started putting up posters around the Square, questioning who was the real daddy of Annie so Max would eventually find out the truth.

Mick didn’t like the way she was threatening his family and so got the Taylors involved to stop her.

The Queen Vic owner lied to Bernie and her family that he spotted Rainie taking drugs so she would have doubts about handing over the unborn child to her and Stuart.

Since then, Bernie has hardly been in the soap, despite what this could mean for the couple’s future.

Fans have also started thinking that actress Norris could be leaving EastEnders altogether after removing any mention of the soap in her Instagram bio.

So does this mean that it could soon be the end for Bernie in Walford?

Luckily, this won’t be the case as Norris isn’t leaving EastEnders for good.

However, she is going to be away from our screens for a while as sources have confirmed that Norris will be taking some time away from the soap.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, the source said: “She [Norris] is taking a planned break from the show but it is safe to say Bernie is coming back shortly.

“She will be back in the Square in no time!”

It isn’t known exactly when Bernie will be temporarily leaving behind her family and the Highways but it could be soon since her air time has been minimal as of late.

But how is this going to impact Rainie and Stuart who are already worried that she is going to change her mind about giving them the baby?

Bernie initially agreed to the arrangement as her family was struggling for money.

This did in turn lead to another storyline which meant she and the baby were at risk.

Bernie was desperate to get pregnant as if she did, it would mean getting her family out of debt.

So she turned to overexercising, eating too little and diet pills which caused her to collapse.

Luckily there were no long-term problems but now with even more stress on her shoulders after Mick’s false claim, this could be the perfect time to get away from it all.

EastEnders airs every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on BBC One.
