Avengers: Infinity War will finally see the Avengers and their allies go head-to-head with Thanos, but the big purple villain isn’t alone – he’ll be joined by his four ‘children’, the Black Order.
Constantine star Michael James Shaw plays the CGI alien Corvus Glaive, but he revealed to Digital Spy that he initially turned down Marvel’s offer.
Nor was Glaive his first audition for the MCU. He also auditioned for Black Panther‘s M’Baku – a role that eventually went to Winston Duke.
“It’s a crazy story,” said Shaw. “It was about a year and a half ago, I was doing a workshop of a play by David Byrne from Talking Heads. I was out hustling, going on auditions on my lunch breaks.
“From that week that I auditioned, I had booked another job, and then I went in for Black Panther on a Wednesday. I didn’t get that. I got the audition for Infinity War the next day. I went in for that, and by Friday, I had booked three jobs, and had to choose between them.
“Funnily enough, I turned down Avengers to begin with, just because the opportunity was taking me to Africa and to see other places. I kind of looked back on that decision like, ‘What the hell was I doing?’
“Lo and behold, January came around, and somehow it was written that I had to do all three jobs. Avengers came back, and said they wanted me. And yeah, it was a dream working on it. It’s one of those stages in your career. It’s dry for a long time, and then all of a sudden, when it rains, it pours. Luckily, this time, I got to do everything.”
Shaw certainly has no sour grapes about missing out on appearing in the “tremendous” Black Panther, and he even got to catch up with some of that movie’s stars on the set of Infinity War.
“I got to talk to a couple of people on set, but I won’t say who, because I don’t want to give away anything about the movie,” he said.
“But I did get to catch up with [Chadwick Boseman], because he also went to Howard University. We were there at different times, but it was good to chat with him. A good guy.”
A recent clip from Infinity War showed Corvus Glaive and his Black Order pal Proxima Midnight (Carrie Coon) battling Black Widow, Falcon and Captain America.
Avengers: Infinity War will be released on April 26 in the UK and April 27 in the US. Book tickets now.
