This is Going to Hurt was the 2017 memoir of former doctor and comedy writer Adam Kay, talking about working at a hospital. The best-selling book has now been transformed for the small screen with actor Ben Whishaw taking on the role of Adam. The comedy-drama follows his professional and personal life as he struggles to juggle both on a daily basis.

In the series, Adam works in the chaotic field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Much like the other junior doctors, this means long shifts, very little thanks and exhaustion.

This has had an ongoing impact on his relationship with Harry (played by Rory Fleck Byrne) who tries to keep things running like clockwork while Adam is busy.

But with the pressure of working for the NHS mounting, will it soon start to drive a wedge between the couple?

Who is the This Is Going To Hurt star Adam Kay married to?

Kay is openly gay and married to his husband James Farrell who is also in the entertainment industry.

While the former doctor is a writer, Farrell works behind the cameras as a producer.

He was behind the talked-about Game of Thrones prequel pilot in 2019 before it was cancelled by HBO.

During his seven-year career, Farrell has worked on various other popular shows as well.

Kay’s husband was a producer on the comedy series Crims, Flat TV, Mrs Brown’s Boys and Scarborough.

Farrell is a producer on Kay’s This is Going to Hurt on BBC One as well.

He worked as the head of development at the BBC Studios and was even named a Hot Shot in a 2014 issue of Broadcast magazine.

It is unknown how long they have been together but it is likely that they met through work.

Kay and Farrell now reside in Oxfordshire with their Airedale terrier, Pip.

Discussing his relationship and family life with The Guardian, Kay said: “Seeing my nieces and nephews grow up, they are just a totally blank slate.

“Their worries and prejudices – that’s what the rest of the world does to them.

“I’m gay, and we’re Uncle Adam and Uncle James to them, and it’s the most normal thing in the world. “

This is Going to Hurt continues with its second episode tonight, Tuesday, February 15, on BBC One.

The synopsis reads: “Still reeling from his mistake, Adam becomes increasingly difficult to be around.

“While he clashes with a colleague over a patient, he tries to make amends at home.”

This is Going to Hurt continues every Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One.
