Why Queen Elizabeth Will Forgive But Not Forget the Way Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Handled Megxit, Expert Reveals

Queen Elizabeth was supportive of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s desire to have a more private life, but was not able to honor their plan to split their time between the UK and the U.S. One royal expert believes that the queen is “willing to forgive” Prince Harry for leaving the family, but won’t forget the way the couple parted ways from their royal life.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their plans

Prince Harry and Meghan announced a plan in January that expressed their desire find a “progressive new role” in the royal family.

They noted in an Instagram post, “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

The Sussexes added, “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”

The queen acted swiftly after the announcement

Queen Elizabeth reportedly was not informed of the Sussexes’ plan before they announced it to the world. In the documentary The Queen: Duty Before Family?, royal commentator Wesley Kerr explained, “The palace let it be known that there was surprise that this statement had been issued.”

“I think the queen was rather surprised to be given a public ultimatum,” Kerr said. The expert further pointed to how the Sussexes’ statement said “that we are going to be different sorts of royals, that we are going to collaborate with the queen, perhaps on our own terms.”

“The queen clearly adores Harry but absolutely refused to be pressurized by him,” the documentary’s narrator explained. “There was no way she would accept his conditions. She issued a firm riposte setting out her own position.”

Queen Elizabeth will forgive Prince Harry but won’t forget, expert says

Many royal watchers have wondered if Prince Harry and Meghan will be welcomed back by the queen if they return to their duties. Royal expert Ingrid Seward told the Daily Star that she believes that Queen Elizabeth will forgive Prince Harry, even though she reportedly was not consulted before the Megxit announcement.

“The Queen is a very very forgiving person, she deeply believes in forgiveness and not holding grudges and I think she would be totally happy to accept Prince Harry and Meghan Markle back in the royal fold,” Seward explained.

She added, “But it isn’t going to happen, we know that now.”

Seward compared Prince Harry to a “prodigal son,” explaining, “Everyone thinks this is the end, he is walking away, but I think the queen views Prince Harry a bit like the prodigal son. There’s a story in the bible about the prodigal son, a boy who did everything wrong and then came back and his father accepted him back, I think that’s how the queen views it.”

“She’s always willing to forgive, she may not forget, but she is willing to forgive,” Seward added.
