There are 650 new coronavirus cases in Victoria, and several more people have died overnight, sources say, as the state braces for tougher restrictions.

A source familiar with the health statistics confirmed the figures, ahead of Premier Daniel Andrews' press conference expected to be held after 1pm.

Melbourne is facing tougher stage four lockdown restrictions within days, which could mean more businesses closing their doors and stricter stay-at-home rules.

State government officials and politicians worked late into Saturday night on the details of the next stage of the fight against the killer virus.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt is expected to also speak the media later this afternoon.
