In a year when there have been so many incredible returns, we couldn’t see it out without the comeback of the iconic Melanie Pearson.
Oh dear, sweet, Melanie (Lucinda Cowden) – even though she left in 1991 her laugh is still ringing in our ears. The ex wife of Joe Mangel, who also once had a one night stand with Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis), is back as the latest familiar face to make her big return to Ramsay Street when Sheila (Colette Mann) tries to pull out the big guns in securing Clive (Geoff Paine) for herself.
Sheila has decided that she definitely wants Clive back in her life, despite spending months pushing him away and ultimately doing something so abhorrent he couldn’t bear to be with her either. She decides Karl (Alan Fletcher) and Susan’s (Jackie Woodburne) Christmas party is the place to chase her love, but fate has other ideas. While Sheila is determined to win him for herself, she has no idea that there are sparks flying (or alcohol flowing) between Clive and Jane Harris (Annie Jones). Sheila’s plans to get Clive on his own keep being thwarted until the biggest stumbling block of all hits – Jane and Clive end up in bed.
Clive sleeping with someone else is far from ideal and puts a dampener on Sheila’s plans. But Jane and Clive can’t deny they have something special there, and they decide it’s not just a one off, they want to give things ago, much to poor Sheila’s upset.
But a little thing like another woman won’t stop her. She goes behind Jane’s back and calls on Des, luring him back to Erinsborough giving the false impression something is up with Jane and that he needs to come and save her. And then Sheila brings out big gun number two, enter Melanie. She’s a big feature from Des and Jane’s past and has a thing or two to say about this coupling.
In her usual style, Melanie doesn’t hold back when she sees the budding romance, and she lets the couple have her exact thoughts on the matter. She’s brutal, and that’s exactly what Sheila wants – she wants Melanie to rip these two apart, so to speak. But things take a turn for the worse when things get heated and Sheila is rushed to hospital. What has she done?!
Scenes air from Monday 4th January on Channel 5.
