Brussels sprouts aren't exactly the most popular item on the shopping list come December, but they are a staple ingredient on a Christmas dinner.

However, one man won't be enjoying a pile of the mini green vegetables this year after making an epic blunder during his online shop.

James Murden posted a picture of a single Brussels sprout and captioned the tweet: "Please note: when ordering sprouts from @Tesco online, quantity 1 does not mean 1 bag of sprouts. It means 1 sprout. Thank you and good night."

The supermarket was quick to reply to the hilarious tweet, saying: "It'll be resolved in the near future. I apologise for the inconvenience caused."

James quickly replied: "Haha it’s all good Lee, just need to decide which family member deserves a sprout for Christmas, decisions decisions!"

Tesco later added: "Hi James, I do apologise but our loose items are individual items that you can order to get the exact amount.

"Unfortunately, the way our system works, each individual loose item counts towards 1 item on the order. We've raised this with the IT team in the past."

Fellow Twitter users found the situation very funny and couldn't resist commenting on the post.

One person wrote: "James, your tweet and the replies that follow are absolutely brilliant. I’ve laughed so much I have tears running down my face.

"Thank you for posting and thanks to everyone else who replied. Utterly brilliant."

Another Twitter user joked: "Poor lonely sprout, wrenched from its family and friends. I do hope Tesco managed to reunite them for Xmas!"

And it seems the supermarket did just that as James posted a photo of himself holding a bunch of sprouts on Christmas Eve.

He captioned the snap: "Twitter… it’s a Christmas Eve Miracle: a whole family of sprouts have just arrived, panic over!

"In all seriousness though… how long do they need microwaving for? Merry Christmas ya filthy animals."
