A pregnant woman has revealed she is so obsessed with the smell of Dettol she ‘goes through a bottle each day’ and would even drink it if she could.

The Brisbane mum, who has one other child, posted on Facebook, revealing her strange obsession, and asking where she can buy the product in bigger quantities.

‘The little ones from Woolworths are being used in a day at the moment,’ she explained.

The woman may have PICA, a rare condition which can make people crave non-food items if they are deficient in certain vitamins and minerals.

Some women said they were given iron transfusions when they had strange chemical cravings, which eased them substantially.

‘I needed a transfusion, please go to you doctor and get some blood levels done,’ one woman urged.

But others gave her advice to help her give into her new-found obsession.

One woman suggested Big W for a 750ml bottle or to check the cleaning aisle for a larger bottle.

Other pregnant women said they are also obsessed with the smell and suggested the Dettol bar soap for the bathroom.

Another asked if she was snorting it, to which she laughed and said she would if she could.

‘I no-kidding get urges to drink it,’ the mum revealed after finding others had experienced similar cravings.

One woman said her ‘pregnancy smell’ was eucalyptus – but her partner banned her from using it after she had a vivid dream about bathing in it.

Another woman said she cried when she was pregnant because she had urges to drink bleach but couldn’t.

Other mums said when they had smell cravings it was because they had iron deficiencies and urged the mum to get tested.

Some people slammed the young woman for wasting the product and said only a small amount is needed.

But she acknowledged them and said she was using it for the smell rather than as a cleaner.

‘I’m mopping daily, definitely using more than needed for the smell. I have been using it undiluted on things too,’ she admitted.

In a mums-net thread on PICA one woman who is obsessed with bleach in what is her second pregnancy revealed her previous strange cravings.

‘I used to suck bath water through a sponge,’ she admitted.

According to Healthline it is important to tell your doctor if you suspect you have PICA during pregnancy.

The health service said doctors may recommend a pre-natal vitamin, more balanced diet or transfusion.

‘If you’re experiencing nausea and vomiting, nutritional food replacement drinks might be a good temporary fix until your appetite returns,’ the service suggests.

In most cases PICA in pregnant women goes away on its own, when baby is born.
