People are slamming Boots' Black Friday deal offering 50% off morning after pill

Black Friday deals cover everything from holidays to your Christmas party dress.

But one thing you might not expect to see a deal on is your contraception.

Boots is offering a 50% discount on the morning after pill, and some people are not happy abut it.

Writer and columnist Rose Stokes described the move as: ‘When basic healthcare meets capitalism,’ in a Tweet, and added, ‘Just to say, @BootsUK — this was a very big error on your part. Totally tone deaf.’

The deal is simple. If you use the Boots online doctor service you can get half off if you use the code BLACKFRIDAY50 at the checkout.

The online service prescribes a number of different morning after pills, depending on your needs, but the EllaOne tablet normally costs £34.95 – which means it would be £17.47 with the discount. The Levonelle tablet costs £28.25 – which is £14.12 with 50% off.

‘This offer is exclusive for Boots Online Doctor and cannot be used in-store or on, or in conjunction with any other offer. Valid until 30 November 2021,’ reads the website.

But some people say there shouldn’t be commercial deals and offers on a product that is important for women’s health and preventing unplanned pregnancies.

‘It should be bloody free anyway and this is gross,’ wrote Hannah Lewin on Twitter.

‘Christ this is so grim,’ adds Isobel Lewis.

Many people take issue with the commercialisation of a product they believe people shouldn’t have to pay for, with some implying that this is a slippery slope.

Others pointed out that it is possible to get emergency contraception – like the morning after pill – from your GP, so questioned why anyone would pay for it.

‘What’s the point of this Boots?!?! It’s free anyways through certain services and your GP,’ asks one Twitter user.

However getting a GP appointment isn’t an option for everyone, and online services such as this can help to improve accessibility, for those willing to pay.

A spokesperson for Boots said: ‘This is a promotion running on our Online Doctor service. The offer is 50% off all men’s and women’s healthcare services.’
