New Year’s Eve is synonymous with firework displays; particularly the major London celebrations around the London Eye. But after a rise in Covid cases across the country, this year’s festivities have once again been cancelled.

Almost 200,000 people have tested positive for Covid each day since the middle of this week in the UK.

England remains the only nation in the UK to avoid imposing harsher restrictions after Christmas.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed earlier this week that New Year’s parties will be going ahead.

But, everyone should take extra precautions and take a lateral flow test before leaving their home, he said.

How to watch firework displays this New Year’s Eve

London’s world-famous firework display has been cancelled this year, for a second year running.

Instead, the BBC will be replacing the celebrations with a live music event in Trafalgar Square.

The “broadcast spectacular” will be shown live on BBC One from 11.25pm.

It’ll also be streaming live on BBC iPlayer, so you can watch on your mobile, laptop, or tablet.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “This year, as well as a brand-new celebration event in Trafalgar Square, we can look forward to a live broadcast spectacular which will showcase our magnificent city on BBC One.

“London is simply magical during these winter months and after all we have endured as a city we have every reason to celebrate as we look ahead to the new year.”

London’s bridges, buildings and iconic landmarks will be illuminated in a stunning light show to mark the new year.

The city’s Christmas lights, ice rinks, and Christmas markets will also be open on New Year’s Eve.

Alternatively, there are still some firework displays going on around the world.

You can tune into the major event happening in Times Square, New York City from your own home.

The stream will include the Times Square Ball Drop, as well as a firework display.

You can watch the fireworks display here, and it’ll kick off at 11pm, US time.

Meanwhile, you can still celebrate the start of 2022 without heading to a New Year’s Eve party this year.

You can follow the iconic Jools Holland’s ‘Jools’ Annual Hootenanny’ on BBC Two from 11.25pm.

Decorating your home is the easiest way to get in the spirit without too much effort.

Balloons and New Year’s Eve bunting are readily available, and will certainly help you to get into the spirit.
