Over the years, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, has worn many lavish pieces of jewellery from the royal collection. In recent months, Prince Edward’s wife was…
GROWING your own veg isn’t the only way to dig up savings in the garden.
Flowers can also help by adding flavour to meals and cutting down on shopping costs.
Chris Bonnett from online garden centre Gardening Express.co.uk said: “Washed flowers can provide a brilliant range of flavours.
“But, never eat any kind of plant unless you’re absolutely sure they are edible. Free apps such as PlantSnap or Flower Checker can help with this.”
As spring has sprung, here are ways your garden picks could pocket you pounds . . .
Nettle soup: Cook some vegetables in oil and then stock until soft and then add some nettle leaves and blend into a soup. Pick your own nettle leaves and make a saving, compared to buying a 500g bag, £5.31, at buywholefoodsonline.co.uk.
Petal cake: Elevate home-made cakes by decorating with vibrant viola or rose petals — both have a sweet, perfumed flavour and are great crystallised. Picking your own will save you buying Cooks’
Ingredients rose petals, £1.99 at Waitrose, or Crystallised Violet Petals, £5.95 at Sous Chef.
SAVING: At least £1.99
Lavender lamb: Change up your roast dinner by adding lavender to your lamb. You can do this by stuffing the meat with sprigs of fresh lavender, or mixing the flowers with honey and oil to form a tasty glaze — a cheaper alternative to The Bay Tree Jelly Lavender Glaze, £2.39 at Ocado.
Elderflower cordial: Great on its own or paired with gin, this cordial will go down a treat. To make your own, trim fresh elderflower heads from their stalks and infuse in a sugar syrup. You can also add lemon zest. Leave for a day, before diluting. Compared to buying Belvoir Organic Elderflower Cordial, £5.25 for 500ml at Planet Organic.
