Meghan Markle is busy taking care of her newborn son, Archie Harrison, but she’s still dealing with negative press on an almost daily basis.
More than almost any other member of the royal family, Markle has been subject to a veritable onslaught of online abuse – haters take issue with everything from Markle’s fashion choices to her Hollywood connections.
However, it is Markle’s connections in the film industry that have been stepping up and defending the Duchess of Sussex in the face of harsh accusations.
What do Meghan Markle’s friends say about her?
When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry, she moved halfway across the world, sold her home in California, and left behind a successful acting career. While she undoubtedly believed that the trade off was well worth it, it couldn’t have been easy to leave behind everything familiar and start life over in a new place.
Reportedly, Markle also cut ties with many of her friends as well – sources say that she was finding it hard to know who to trust, and she was forced to tighten her inner circle. Still, a few close friends have remained by her side, defending the Duchess through thick and thin.
In February 2019, following several weeks of exceptionally vicious online bullying, five of Meghan Markle’s closest friends spoke out on her behalf. Although they remained anonymous, the group spoke out and said that while Markle has endured the “lies and untruths” that have been spread about her, they worried for the sake of her health and that of her baby.
Then, of course, Markle’s Hollywood friends decided to speak up – even George Clooney, a personal friend of Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, said in an interview that he finds the treatment of Markle by the public and press “frustrating.”
Markle’s closest friends have spoken out
In mid-May, even more of Markle’s friends went public, opening up about their relationship with her. They praised her commitment to social justice and mentioned the sincere love that Meghan Markle has for Prince Harry. Her friends also addressed some of the backlash that she has received, and rumors claiming that Markle is difficult to work with.
Markle’s BFF Daniel Martin claimed that in the years that he has known Markle, she has never once had what he referred to as a “diva fit,” and that the rumors don’t even seem to describe the same person that he counts as a friend.
The interview revealed that her friends believe many of the issues that the press and public have with Markle are related to racism and sexism. Clearly, this is hard to prove, but it is an argument that has been made before.
Is Meghan Markle telling her friends what to say?
Meghan Markle has not spoken out regarding any of the statements made by her friends, and she isn’t likely to. The royal family prefers that everyone keep things close to the vest and not reveal any public displays of emotion. It is even considered to be a breach of royal protocol to be overly affectionate with one’s spouse in public.
While critics have claimed that Markle is enlisting the help of her friends to try and garner positive press, there has been nothing to really support that theory. It is more likely that her friends are having a hard time watching their friend struggle with the sheer volume of negativity from the press, and that they want to do anything they can to try and thwart it.
Meghan Markle is still on maternity leave, but it will be interesting to see if the perceptions surrounding her change at all when she returns to her royal duties.
