One popular way that people will increase their vitamin intake without consuming more food is by taking gummy vitamins. It doesn’t seem like this is going away anytime soon— in the United States, gummy vitamins were valued at $2.68 billion in 2016, and it’s predicted to reach as high as $4.17 by 2025. This means that more people will purchase gummy vitamins with the idea that they’re as good as their pill counterparts.

But that’s actually a misconception, according to a report released by Women’s Health. While binging on gummy vitamins might sound like a good idea, it’s dangerous to think of them as candy because they’re not. Gummy vitamins are still vitamins- they’re just in a candy-like form to make it easier to consume. Consuming too many can cause a few problems to your health.

One big consequence that comes from eating too many gummy vitamins. Those gummy vitamins contain about seven to eight calories and only one to two grams of sugar — which isn’t much to start with. But if you were to consume half a dozen or so, then the calorie and sugar content will quickly increase without the consumer even realizing it. Furthermore, the sugar alcohols that add to the sugar content can cause diarrhea if too many gummies are eaten.

The other big consequence experts warn is overdosing on certain vitamins. Your intake of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as minerals iron and zinc, should be monitored carefully. It’s important to know how much of each you need, and how much you’ve consumed from food and drinks by checking labels appropriately. Once you know how much you’ve consumed, you can determine which vitamins you need to add to make up for what’s missing. An overdose on certain vitamins could cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even liver failure — all of which need serious and immediate medical attention.

So with everything said, the most important thing to take away is that gummy vitamins are perfectly safe to consume as part of a balanced diet. But overdosing on them could result in dangerous side effects that will negatively impact your health one way or another. Consume only the recommended amount of gummy vitamins on the label to prevent any health issues from arising. After all, vitamins are supposed to improve your health, not destroy it.
