According to a new research, there are hidden chemicals lurking in our homes, ranging from food and furniture to cosmetics and even toiletries.

Appearing on Australia’s Today show, US doctor Bruce Blumberg revealed the household items that could be contributing to weight gain – and it may surprise you.

‘We discovered that there’s chemicals in your environment, in your everyday life that can affect your propensity to gain weight,’ Dr Blumberg said.

‘So if you’ve been exposed to such chemicals, you will be more likely to gain weight than had you not been exposed to them.’

The author of new book The Obesogen Effect said the chemicals were ‘disrupting our hormonal systems’.

‘So some of the chemicals we work with are called endocrine disruptive obesogens and they disturb the normal way that the hormone system in your body work,’ he explained.

‘Normally, the hormonal systems in your body are tightly regulated and they could be disturbed by chemicals in the diet and the environment that can cause a whole host of problems among weight gain.’

Surprisingly, Dr Blumberg said some cosmetics and moisturisers are to blame for weight gain because they contain preservatives called parabens

His research suggested the healthiest foods pose a risk to our health.

‘Ironically, the foods you should be eating the most are fruits and vegetables are among the most highly contaminated with obesogenic fungicides, which came as a very big surprise to us,’ he said.

Dr Blumberg revealed some kitchen utensils and even food packaging materials could also be contributing to weight problems.

‘Non-stick cookware can leak chemicals into the food that can affect your weight gain,’ he said.

‘Food packaging materials like microwavable popcorn – anything that is coated with a substance that prevents grease from coming through is also likely to obesogenic.’

Dr Blumberg said there were some toothpastes on the market that could contribute to weight gain because it contains triclosan, which is an anti-bacterial agent

He also suggested avoiding drinking out of plastic water bottles – and opt for stainless steel or glass.

Surprisingly, Dr Blumberg said some cosmetics and moisturisers are to blame for weight gain because they contain preservatives called parabens.

‘You have to try quite hard to find cosmetics or personal care products that don’t have parabens,’ he said.

He also warned against labels with ‘fragrance’ on them.

‘Another thing to worry about is the word “fragrance”. So you might think fragrance is a benign, it’s orange or something nice,’ he said.

‘But the word “fragrance”, at least in the US, is an exception to the law. So if you’ve labelled as “fragrance, you can put anything in there.’

Dr Blumberg said there were some toothpastes on the market that could contribute to weight gain because it contains triclosan, which is an anti-bacterial agent.

‘Triclosan has been shown by several studies that cause weight gain,’ he explained.
