Dad says I should get on the property ladder, but I don't want to do it alone

DEAR DEIDRE: MY dad thinks it’s time I left home and bought my own property, but I’m terrified of being lonely.

I’m a 30-year-old man who still lives at home.

Although I’m single, I have a great social life, a good job and generally I’m happy.

But Dad says it’s time I got on the property ladder and found a place of my own.

I struggle with loneliness and the thought of living alone makes me feel sad and anxious.

I’d rather wait until I meet a woman who I could buy a house with. But my parents say I can’t count on that happening and should do it now.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your parents are concerned about your future, and probably feel it’s time they had their own space too.

But it’s not helpful of them to put pressure on you. If you aren’t ready to buy a property alone, don’t rush into it.

Consider a house share or, if you get a mortgage, taking in a lodger for company.

Talk to your dad and explain how his nagging makes you feel. Ask him to be kind and patient.
