From Wagner to Matt Cardle — what 2010’s X Factor stars are up to now – The Sun

THE One Direction lads may be the biggest X Factor winners now, but they didn’t actually take the crown in 2010.

Here’s what happened to the winner and other finalists of the most-watched series of The X Factor ever.

Matt Cardle, 37

Position: Winner

Best moment: That knowing glint in his eye during his winning moment when Harry Styles so poignantly mouthed in his ear: “Think how much p***y you’re going to get now…”

Post X Factor: After reaching No.2 with debut album Letters (and swapping DMs with a pre-Prince-Harry Meghan Markle), Matt and his trademark cap were dropped by Simon Cowell’s Syco. The former painter and decorator released Top 10 album The Fire and Porcelain, which reached number 11, before he checked into rehab blaming his drug addiction on overnight fame. He reinvented himself as a West End star, appearing in Memphis and Jesus Christ Superstar.

And now: With an estimated £2.2million fortune, Matt – currently dating Amber Hernamen, 29 – re-signed with Sony and released Time To Be Alive in 2018.

Rebecca Ferguson, 33

Position: Runner-up

Best moment: Her rousing duet with megastar Christina Aguilera in the final (also the, ahem, secret four-month fling with 1D’s Zayn Malik).

Post X Factor: The former legal secretary went on to enjoy a successful solo career, producing four Top 10 albums, and is thought to be worth £2million.

And now: With over a million sales and critical acclaim, Rebecca – now in a happy relationship after being dumped while pregnant by the father of her third child Arabella in 2014 – is penning album number five with the legendary Nile Rodgers.

Cher Lloyd, 26

Position: Fourth

Best moment: Cheryl’s rapping mini-me wowed with Soulja Boy’s Turn My Swag On during the auditions, but it was her tearjerker cover of Shakespears Sister’s Stay that silenced the “one-trick pony” criticism.

Post X Factor: Despite hitting No.1 with debut single Swagger Jagger, Cher’s reputation as a stroppy teen saw her quit the UK for America where she released second album Sorry I’m Late, joined Taylor Swift on tour, featured on a Demi Lovato track and gained 6.9m Twitter followers (1m more than Cheryl herself).

And now: She had daughter Delilah-Rae, two, with hairdresser husband Craig Monk in 2018 and is now back with a bang and releasing new music after a six-year break. Oh, and she featured on the cover of Fabulous, no less, earlier this month!

Mary Byrne, 60

Position: Fifth

Best moment: Dubbed Tesco Mary after the supermarket where she used to work, she defied laryngitis halfway through the live shows to give a powerhouse performance of This Is A Man’s World, complete with Hollywood makeover.

Post X Factor: Mary released four albums and an autobiography, performed in Menopause: The Musical alongside Linda Nolan and on cruise ships with Sir Cliff Richard.

And now: Genuinely unrecognisable, Mary has lost 6st and now rocks a blonde crop. She is pursuing a career in stage acting and has just toured Ireland in comedy play Dirty Dusting and before lockdown had been due to appear in the Snow White summer panto in Portlaoise in July. She is still single and a mum to daughter Debbie.

Wagner Carrilho, 63

Position: Sixth

Best moment: Who could forget the Brazilian’s bongo-fuelled mash-up of Ricky Martin’s She Bangs and The B52’s Love Shack? Or Louis Walsh’s inability to pronounce his name correctly?

Post X Factor: As soon as the former PE teacher finished the X Factor tour, he immediately started selling personalised videos to fans on social media for £9.99 and charging £1,000 for a personal appearance, which included a performance of She Bangs. Obvs.

And now: Still on the PA circuit, Wagner continues to earn a steady living. Late fatherhood has also kept him busy with son Leon born in 2012 and daughter Lilian in 2014 with 28-year-old girlfriend Lydia Longville.

Katie Waissel, 34

Position: Seventh

Best moment: Surviving the bottom two four weeks in a row, as the public became increasingly outraged at her repeatedly being saved by the judges.

Post X Factor: After her self-titled album failed to chart in 2011, Katie formed rock band Red Velvet Lovers. Following limited success she appeared on 2016’s Celebrity Big Brother.

And now: Twice-divorced Katie had son Hudson in 2018 after splitting from New York model Andy Speer while pregnant. She’d relocated to the Big
Apple for a fresh start after CBB and her divorce from second hubby Brian Moote but moved back to London to be near her family following the split from Andy. She is now a qualified personal trainer.

Aiden Grimshaw, 28

Position: Ninth

Best moment: Aiden’s deadlock departure – when the judges opted to save Katie Waissel – was the shock of the series after he consistently secured the highest public votes with his moody renditions of Thriller and Mad World.

Post X Factor: He had a Top 20 album with Misty Eye before parting with Cowell’s label Syco. In 2016, he got a 20-month driving ban after being found to be twice over the drink-drive limit.

And now: Aiden has bad-boyed up his image with a semi-handlebar moustache and tattoos and goes by his stage name Butterjack. His latest release, a remix of Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff, clocked 2,000 listens on Soundcloud.
