Zooey Deschanel likes to dress up her home for the holidays. However, she’s also conscious of the impact her design choices have on the environment. The New Girl star shared some of her holiday decorating tips with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. Here’s what she had to say.
Zooey Deschanel prefers a live Christmas tree
Deschanel likes to reduce waste by planting a real Christmas tree instead of buying an artificial tree. For her, the best part about having a real tree is the smell. She also likes that a live tree can be replanted.
“Nothing beats the smell of a fresh Christmas tree during the holidays!” says Deschanel. “One of my favorite ways to be more eco-conscious this time of year is to use a live potted tree that can be planted outdoors after the holiday season. Live Christmas trees, that still have the root ball intact, are ideal for short-term decorating during the holidays but can be replanted to provide benefits for the environment long after the holiday season has passed. Plus, it’s a great outdoor activity to do with the kids!”
Zooey Deschanel builds her own wreath
Instead of buying a wreath from the store, Deschanel enjoys building her own. She says this is a great opportunity to recycle by using materials you have around you.
“Nothing says ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ like making a holiday wreath using natural materials you gather yourself!” says Deschanel.
Deschanel uses some of the scraps from her garden to spruce up her homemade wreath. She also likes to keep things interesting by inviting her children to participate in the festivities.
“I love to create my own unique wreath to put on my front door for the whole holiday season by using scraps of greenery from our garden, produce from our Lettuce Grow Farmstand, and clippings from our Christmas tree,” she continues. “I get the kids involved by asking them to scavenge for leaves, berries and other natural flora from our backyard for an additional festive touch!”
A citrus garland
“Dried citrus is a family-favorite DIY and sustainable craft I do with my kids during the holidays– we love the organic look and festive smell the dried citrus fruits add to our holiday decor!” says Deschanel.
Deschanel says she aims to keep waste to a minimum by using fruit from her refrigerator that might have been forgotten. She also utilizes her local farmer’s market.
“To reduce waste, I try to use up oranges, lemons and grapefruit that were left forgotten in the fridge or buy some of the wonkiest-looking produce at my local farmer’s market to give them a second life,” shares Deschanel. “All I do is thinly slice the fruit, bake at a low heat for a few hours until they are completely dehydrated, string the dried slices onto twine and hang!”
