Robert Pattinson may be highly regarded as a top actor by many in the industry. But during his Twilight days, he felt that his co-star Kristen Stewart was the superior actor.
Robert Pattinson once revealed he was intimidated by Kristen Stewart
When Pattinson first auditioned with Stewart for the Twilight film, it was Stewart who vouched for the actor. This was because Stewart was pretty confident in Pattinson’s abilities after rehearsing with him.
“It was so clear who worked,” she once told The New Yorker.
She felt that she and Pattinson had the right approach to acting. To her, Pattinson had an “intellectual approach that was combined with ‘I don’t give a f*** about this, but I’m going to make this sing.’ And I was, like, ‘Ugh, same.’”
Whereas Stewart was impressed by Pattinson, Pattinson admitted to feeling another emotion toward the Panic Room actor.
“I was a little intimidated by Kristen [Stewart] in my audition. So I played it like a guy who is beating himself up a lot about everything. I don’t think anyone else did it like that. I think they concentrated on the confidence aspect. If you read the book, you know he’s the perfect man, ideal man. If you’re a guy, you have certain ideals about what you think is attractive,” he once said speaking to Time.
Robert Pattinson thought Kristen Stewart was a better actor than he was
Pattinson had been a bit critical of his acting in the past. At one point, the actor didn’t even consider what he did as acting. It was the reason why Pattinson saw Stewart as a better actor. According to The Lighthouse star, Stewart could do things when performing that he couldn’t.
“Kristen doesn’t take any slack. She sticks to her guns — and that’s difficult to do,”Pattinson once told Harper’s Bazaar. ” I don’t really know how to act. I’m kind of guessing everything. … Even though I can conceptualize stuff, she can actually do it. I can make something so complex and then be like, That was pout 27.’”
Why Robert Pattinson is against method acting
Although he might not have considered himself an actor earlier in his career, many of Pattinson’s fans might argue otherwise. But method acting isn’t a strategy that Pattinson normally implores in his performances to get into character. Speaking to Jennifer Lopez in Variety’s Actors on Actors, he shared that he’d find it difficult to take a character home with him. Especially when he’s playing parts as complex as the role he played in The Lighthouse.
“We’d do these completely wild scenes, and then literally after a take, you’d be exhausted. It’s kind of cathartic. I don’t know how you’d be able to bring the part home. It would be impossible,” he said.
The Batman star also felt that actors often display negative behaviors whenever they go method. It was also another undesirable trait he had towards method acting.
“I always say about people who do method acting, you only ever see people do the method when they’re playing an a**holes,” Pattinson said. “You never see someone being lovely to everyone while they’re really deep in character.”
