Mike Tindall is on I’m A Celeb for money as work dried up during pandemic, pal claims

A friend of former England rugby star Mike Tindall has claimed that the ex- portsman is giving his I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! stint his best shot because he's in need of the money.

Sports presenter Alex Pain professed that Mike's public speaking work has dried up during the pandemic, which began in 2020.

Alex, 42, told The Sun this week that his rugby captain pal was not as well off as some might believe an extended member of the royal family to be.

"It's not like he’s sitting there in a pile of money," Alex – who hosts The Good, The Bad and The Rugby podcast alongside Mike and fellow sports star James Haskell – revealed. "He’s a guy who’s in the public eye and that’s where he earns his money.

"Mike’s primary source of income is public speaking, and he goes out and does dinners.

"He’s on the sporting circuit but it’s worth remembering that the last two years haven’t been pretty much a day’s work for people in that sort of industry, entertainment and hospitality industry."

Mike is reported to be bagging £265,000 for his jungle stint.

Alex also explained that Mike – who is married to The King's niece Zara Tindall, 41 – wouldn't have accepted the invitation to join the big-name line-up if he believed the stint would cause any friction in the Royal Family.

He claimed that Mike would do "absolutely nothing to jeopardise" his relationship with his wife's family.

"He wouldn’t be doing it if it was a problem," Alex explained. "I know that much."

Last night's instalment of the show saw Mike demonstrating his emotional side after becoming visibly moved to tears when Corrie pal Sue Cleaver read out a letter from Zara.

The instant that Sue began reading the sentimental note, it started with a lovely term of endearment as Sue read out: "Hi, my love."

In her letter, Zara, 41, gave her husband an update on their three children, telling him that daughters, Mia, eight, and Lena, four, were enjoying their sports and 19-month-old son Lucas was learning new words.

The note read: “Hi my love, we are missing you so much and really needing some papa hugs, but glad you’re sharing them with your campmates.

"The girls are enjoying sports and throwing themselves into everything at the moment and the little man is loving life, smashing it up, learning some new words. Z, M, L and L. x”
