Why Lucas Torreira rejected chance to do Arsenal medical

Lucas Torreira’s father says the Uruguay midfielder turned down the chance to have his Arsenal medical while he’s in Russia at the World Cup, but the switch will still go through .

The £26.4m deal for the 22-year-old has been in place for a few weeks, but has been held up as the South Americans have reached the quarter-finals – where they’ll play France on Friday.

Unai Emery is anxious to make Torreira his fourth summer signing since taking over from Arsene Wenger this summer, following on from Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulous, but Ricardo Torreira says his son’s focus on the World Cup has taken precedence.
