Justin Lin Says His 11-Year-Old Son Came Up With F9’s Wildest Stunt

Fast & Furious 9 director Justin Lin has revealed that his young son came up with the movie’s wildest stunt.

In a new interview with Empire magazine, the filmmaker said that shortly after they decided they were going to incorporate magnets into one of the eagerly anticipated sequel’s big set-pieces, 11-year-old Oqwe suggested that they add an airplane into the mix.

“We were in London for a week, and I had my son Oqwe with me, and the only way we could hang out was that he would come to the meetings,” Lin recalled.

“Thankfully, those meetings were full of toy cars, and when an action beat proved tricky, Oqwe came up with a two-word solution: magnet plane.

“We were talking about the ravine [sequence] and I said, ‘Alright, so here’s [Tyrese Gibson’s character] Roman and [Ludacris’s] Tej. [John Cena’s baddie] Jakob needs to get to the other side–how does he get there?’

“Oqwe just picked it up and pitched the idea of the plane and everything. After us spending hundreds of hours on planning… I guess he was paying attention, and he understood the characters.”

In Fast & Furious 9, Vin Diesel will once again reprise his role as Dom Toretto and be seen sharing the screen with the likes of fellow franchise faves Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster, who are set to share their first scene together on screen since the series began.

Sung Kang, whose character Han was previously believed to have been killed off, will also star, along with Game of Thrones‘ Nathalie Emmanuel, Dame Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron, who’s back as cyber-terrorist Cipher.
