Cruising star Jane McDonald, 57, married her manager Henrik Brixen in 1998 but it wasn’t meant to be. The singer revealed the real reason why they never had children together, as their relationship, she admitted, had become to feel “lonely”.

Now happily besotted with teenage sweetheart Eddie Rothe, a former drummer with the 1960s band The Searchers, Jane took a trip down memory lane while looking back at her life in her 2019 autobiography Riding The Waves: My Story.

Recalling the conversation she had with Henrik about growing their family, she revealed there was “no room” for children in his future plans to take her career to the next level.

“Henrik and I once talked about having children but there wasn’t room for babies in his plans for me,” she wrote.

“I began to feel lonely in my marriage.”

The pair met when he was working as a plumbing engineer on a ship and as sparks began to fly, he picked up the role as her manager after they married in the late 90s.

But this was a decision she would soon regret.

“Your manager is your boss and tells you what to do, what to wear and who to be, so our relationship changed,” Jane wrote.

“I loved him with all my heart, but felt he’d stopped looking at me as a wife. I became a product.”

She continued: “I lost confidence and became introverted.

“Eventually, I came to the devastating conclusion that I really did have nothing left. I told Henrik, ‘I’m firing you as my manager.'”

And while many may believe that this would have caused a rift between the pair for good Jane, whose new show Christmas Cruising begins tonight, explained that he always put her first, regardless of his own ambitions.

But it was costly to their marriage as the two split in 2003, after five years.

Speaking to The Mirror, the performer insisted it was amicable as he walked away from their marriage to “save her career”.

“Henrik tried his very, very best and he was brilliant at what he did, but he didn’t know the industry,” she confessed.

“We’d come to a point where Henrik had made quite a few enemies and he said, ‘If I don’t leave you, you are never going to have a career.’

“And that is why I never talk about Henrik in a bad light at all because he was the one that walked out of the marriage to save my career.”

The TV personality touched upon the decision to choose to not have children back in 2013, revealing she couldn’t have the successful career she looked forward to and enjoy family life at the same time.

Jane has made a name for herself performing all over the high seas as she serenades holidaygoers with her incredible voice.

“For me, it was an easy decision to not have children, because I knew I couldn’t do both,” she told Echo News at the time.
