Inside Courteney Cox’s Relationship With David Arquette

Courteney Cox and David Arquette were one of the most talked-about couples in Hollywood in the late ’90s and well into the 2000s. The pair first met on the set of the 1996 horror film “Scream,” where they played love interests (via InStyle).

The pair dated for two years before Arquette proposed in 1998. The couple walked down the aisle the following year in a lavish ceremony in San Francisco, Calif. All of Cox’s “Friends” co-stars were in attendance, including Jennifer Aniston and her then-husband Brad Pitt. Arquette’s famous family was also there, which featured his sister Patricia and her former husband Nicolas Cage. The couple gave birth to their only child, a daughter named Coco, five years after tying the knot, (via Glamour).

Reports of Cox and Arquette’s marriage being on the rocks began to surface, and the two admitted that they had been going to couple’s therapy to work through their issues. “We’ve done couples therapy in the past. We’re not lazy about our marriage. We have the same arguments we’ve had for years,” Cox admitted at the time. In October 2011, the pair announced their split with a joint statement, which read, “We have agreed to a trial separation that dates back for some time. The reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage. We remain best friends and responsible parents to our daughter and we still love each other deeply.”

David and Courteney are successfully co-parenting

InStyle reports that Courteney Cox and David Arquette officially filed for divorce in 2012, but remained dedicated to co-parenting their daughter Coco. When speaking about the split the “Friends” star admitted that she and Arquette were very different people. “There are a lot of things that David likes to do completely the opposite things I do,” the actress confessed. “I don’t want to inhibit him in his life. He really is a very gregarious guy, he’s very outgoing. I’m much more of an introvert.” On his part, Arquette told Howard Stern that Cox grew tired of his antics and didn’t want to “mother” him any longer.

The Things reports that Arquette struggled after splitting from Cox and fell into a downward spiral of depression and substance abuse. The actor admitted to having a breakdown and even checked himself into rehab to get treatment for his issues. After getting help, Arquette met journalist Christina McLarty in 2013 and the pair hit it off. They got married in 2015 and have welcomed two children together. Meanwhile, Cox has been dating musician Johnny McDaid since 2013. As for Cox and Arquette’s current relationship, the actor says that things are good between him and his ex-wife. “We just respect each other,” he explained. “No matter what people go through, you still have a child together. When you love someone, you want them to be happy, even if it’s not with you.”
