Their last appearance together was in sitcom Gavin & Stacey. 

But as they are reunited for the first time in a decade Sheridan Smith and Alison Steadman find themselves in far more sombre scenes for their latest drama.

The pair play a mother and daughter dealing with the devastating consequences of dementia in television film Care.

Miss Smith is Jenny, a single mother of two who depends on her widowed mother Mary, played by Miss Steadman, for childcare so she can work in a supermarket

In the BBC1 one-off Miss Smith is Jenny, a single mother of two who depends on her widowed mother Mary, played by Miss Steadman, for childcare so she can work in a supermarket. 

When Mary has a stroke and develops dementia, their lives are changed for ever.

The Liverpool-set drama is written by Jimmy McGovern and Gillian Juckes, whose real-life experiences inspired the story.

BBC drama chief Piers Wenger says the 90-minute film, to be shown later in the year, is a ‘truly remarkable story of one woman’s battle to get the best care for her mother’.
