Angelina Jolie’s eldest son Maddox has just turned 18, but unlike most other celebrity offspring, he chose to celebrate the landmark with a low-key outing.
Maddox and his mother visited family friend and First They Killed My Father author Loung Ung in Cleveland, Ohio on his big 1-8, enjoying a casual lunch.
Ung shared pictures to Facebook showing Maddox, wearing a black t-shirt and a white baseball cap, sitting next to Angelina, 44, who was dressed in a dusty pink maxi dress.
The author captioned the picture: ‘Angelina and Maddox visited me in Cleveland this past week to toast Maddox’s upcoming 18th birthday! We started with lunch at Market Garden Brewpub and a visit to Ohio City Farm/The Refugee Response Program and Cleveland Museum of Art!
‘I met Maddox when he was just a year old and today he turns eighteen and going off to college! So proud! Happy Birthday, Maddox!’
Maddox is not only pals with Ung due to his family connections, but has a producing credit on the 2017 adaptation of her book First They Killed My Father, which was directed by Angelina.
Oscar-winner Ange first met Maddox when he was three months old, with the actress and her then-husband Billy Bob Thornton applied to adopt him in Cambodia.
In March 2001, Angelina and Billy Bob announced that they were adopting the now seven-month-old Maddox from an orphanage in Battambang; however, the couple split in May the same year, and Angelina adopted her son alone.
Maddox was adopted by Brad Pitt in 2006 and had his surname changed to Jolie-Pitt, alongside his siblings Pax, 15 (adopted by Angelina in 2007), Zahara, 14 (adopted by Angelina in 2005), Shiloh, 13, and 11-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
And now Maddox will be flying the coop, as it’s been claimed he is set to attend university in South Korea.
The eldest Jolie-Pitt will start studying biochemistry at South Korea’s Yonsei University, and his mum will be flying to Seoul to help him get settled.
A source told People: ‘Mum is dropping him off in August. She is very proud. She will miss seeing him as much, but he’s ready.’
The insider added that Maddox got into other universities but specifically chose Yonsei and has been taking Korean language lessons several times a week in preparation.
Now that’s commitment.
