Former Arsenal footballer Alex Scott, 36, has responded to her BBC colleague Dan Walker, 44, after he wished her “all the best” before her debut on Football Focus. Alex shared her hopes to make Dan proud in her new role, ahead of her first episode replacing him as host.

Dan, who also fronts BBC Breakfast, hosted the programme for 12 years up until his departure, which was announced earlier this year.

Alex recently impressed viewers on BBC One, as she presented the broadcaster’s coverage of the Tokyo Olympics.

In a sweet message to Alex alongside a photo of the pair, Dan wrote in view of his 722,000 Twitter followers this morning: “Football Focus was my dream job & being able to do it for 12 years was an incredible privilege.

“A new chapter starts this weekend and I want to wish my friend @AlexScott all the best in the chair.

“She has a great team around her and I’m sure she’ll be brilliant. #FootballFocus.”

Alex wrote back to Dan this evening, just hours before her first appearance on the sports show.

She replied in view of her 360,000 followers: “Big big shoes to fill, I will try do you proud.”

Alex went on to say that she is glad she’ll be back home from filming the BBC show in time to watch Dan compete in Strictly Come Dancing 2021 this autumn.

 

The star, who competed in Strictly herself in 2019, added: “One big positive though, I can get home to watch you Cha Cha Cha on a Saturday night.

“Cant wait to cheer you on x.”(sic)

Fans took to the comments section of the stars’ exchange to share their thoughts.

One person wrote: “You will do great, the two of you did the best two programmes for the BBCs coverage of the Olympics great bookends then and will be going forward.”

Another added: “Hope you can give Dan a few Strictly tips, Alex! Xxxx.”

A third penned: “No need to worry Alex, you’ll be brilliant!!!”

A fourth fan commented: “Both of you will be fantastic.”

Despite his exit from Football Focus, Dan will be kept busy for the rest of this year with his work on BBC Breakfast and training for Strictly.

The father-of-three admitted that he was very nervous ahead of his dancing debut this autumn.

“I am definitely excited, a little bit worried, mostly terrified and a small part of me is considering going into hiding!” he said.

“My kids have only ever asked me to go on two shows… Saturday Mash Up and Strictly.

“I did Saturday Mash Up this summer so… it’s time to embrace the sequins,” Dan added.
