The Good Morning Britain host – who has enjoyed many a drinking session with the footballer – said it's not uncommon for Wayne's long-time spouse to join him on his boozy nights out – though insisted they're few and far between.
The DC United striker was arrested at Washington’s Dulles International Airport last month for public intoxication and swearing, with BBC pundit Danny Murphy and fans accusing the 33-year-old of having a drink problem.
Rooney claimed he was left "disorientated" following a cocktail of alcohol and sleeping pills, after he was detained at the airport.
Wife Coleen, 32, was reportedly left fuming by the football star's latest boozy antics and banned him from leaving the house alone.
But, despite once enjoying a wild night out together in California, Piers insisted his mate is not an alcoholic and doesn't actually drink all that often.
He told The Sun: “I messaged Wayne the other day and he’s really good. I once got blind drunk with him in LA during what was one of the greatest dinners of all time.
“He’d been drinking like a bloody gorilla — was swaying all over the place — and, at the end, stood up and promptly fell over.
“All the glasses went flying and Wayne fell back into an olive tree plant pot. He was just lying there, gurgling."
He added: "Coleen was furious and dragged him home, except when I woke up at 6am the next morning, up popped a tweet from her saying they were still going at some nightclub in West Hollywood! So it’s not just Wayne who likes a drink, she’s just as bad.
“But I don’t think he has a drink problem in the way people think — he’s not like Gazza or George Best, where it’s a real problem.
“He doesn’t drink a lot, all the time, but when he drinks, he drinks a lot. I love Wayne, he’s having a great time out there.”
Piers' comments come after Coleen was reportedly left fuming by Roo's latest boozy antics.
A source claimed: "Coleen was really p***ed off with Wayne for getting into trouble again.
Another source close to Coleen added: "He's a nice lad but a liability when he's had a drink."
