Expedition Unknown: Egypt Live sees Josh Gates with world-renowned Egyptologists in Indiana Jones-style exploration

At the Television Critics Association’s 2019 winter tour, it was announced that one of their most popular show hosts is heading a live explore in Egypt, a completely new structured event for an established Discovery series, Expedition Unknown,

At Discovery’s TCA winter tour session, it was announced that Josh Gates will be front and center of the all-new live project from Egypt, where an ancient sarcophagus will be opened for the first time.

This is an exceptionally rare thing, as most ancient ruins and Egyptian tombs have been catalogued and curated by the government or spirited away by unethical artifact and antiquities traders.

But this is live TV and if you are a certain age, you may remember the big live event with Geraldo Rivera and Al Capone’s vault. Trust us that Discovery will not let egg land on Gate’s handsome face.

Egypt actually still has some mysteries and hidden unspoiled tmbs ripe for the picking. The country remains shrouded in deep mysteries and it a destination of wonder and profound history.

What do we know?

During a live 2-hour multiplatform event, Discovery will have Gates on a live feed and broadcast from Egypt in hopes this tomb will have ancient artifacts.

In the event there is a treasure trove of items, Gates will be joined by experts who can help him interpret and sort through the items placed with the corpse of a long-deceased Egyptian royal.

Those tuning in will see inner chambers of an excavation site, where archaeologists have discovered a network of vertical shafts landing in an underground network of tunnels and tombs. Producers estimate there are 40 mummies “believed to be part of the noble elite” who rest there.

Discovery claims that this massive underground complex of chambers “is a treasure trove of antiquities.”

And that these tunnels and remains have been “undisturbed for thousands of years.”

There are unexplored chambers and with all the good luck and stars in alignment, those will be the money shots where Gates brings us all for this exciting live event.

Other accomplishments to include are the reveal of the identity of a particular as-of-now unidentified mummy and it’s “mysterious limestone sarcophagus found buried deep within the complex.

From Discovery:

This is Discovery at its best, as we seek to uncover history that has been buried in the sands of Egypt for millennia. I’m excited as Josh Gates takes us on one of his most ambitious expeditions yet.

Who is joining Gates?

Gates will be joined by world-renowned Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass, and Mostafa Waziri, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt.

Who is behind this special event?

Discovery Studios’ Sandy Varo Jarrell, Peter Isacksen and Jason Sklaver serve as executive producers with Brad Kuhlman, Casey Brumels and star Josh Gates who are also executive producers for Ping Pong Productions. Big Dreams Entertainment’s Leslie Greif is an executive producer. Discovery Channel’s Howard Swartz is executive producer as well.
