ASHLEY BILLIG, 25

I AM AT the General Post Office, Bourke Street Mall.

I AM a retail manager at Cotton On.

I AM WEARING a turtleneck from Uniqlo’s HEATTECH range. It was $20. I love Uniqlo for their basics because the quality to price range is really good. I’m a big supporter of buying things for quality and looks over price tag. I’m from Perth and it’s perfect for Melbourne because it’s so cold here. This is a chest rig from Alyx, a designer brand by Matthew Williams. It’s like a more stylish bum bag and it’s got bulldog clips, so you just put it on and clip it. The pants and socks are from Subtype. They’ve started making their own range and it’s hell clean. There’s a lot of detailing, like the rubber embossed lettering on the pants. The shoes are just Nike Shox. They’re cool-ugly, and actually really comfortable. I like the contrast between a sort of derro shoe, white socks and dress pants. My beanie is just from Cotton On, but it ties back to the shoes and chest rig. I was going for more of a chromatic I got these rings off ASOS and my grills from Perth. My dad bought my mum this necklace when they were going out. They were quite young. I saw it and wanted it, but my mum refused. She wouldn’t give it to me for ages, and then one day just did. I like it because it’s thin. I’m also wearing a Casio Databank watch. If you don’t have heaps of money to drop on a Rolex, you’re better off getting a retro Casio.

MY STYLE changes on the daily. I’ve been cataloguing my outfits on my Instagram (@guccimilkshakee) but today I’ve gone for a clean tech-y dad sort of vibe. I don’t really like to conform to a single style. I really like techwear and military-inspired stuff. I wear a lot of short-sleeve button-ups, but then might pair it with Nike or Adidas trackpants, sneakers and a jacket. You could see me in a full Nike tracksuit one day, but then Dr Martens, black jeans, and a button-up low-cut viscose top with long coat the next day. I like mixing styles, so it could be clean cut but incorporating street elements.

I ADMIRE THE STYLE OF… I just see people walking around and look at what they’re wearing. I’m the sort of person that just appreciates when people dress well. It doesn’t need to be similar to how I dress, so if I saw a goth chick in an outfit, I might not wear it but think something she’s wearing is cool, and consider how I would incorporate that into my style.

MY FAVOURITE PLACES TO SHOP ARE… I mostly buy online. I buy a lot from Subtype, which has an online store. ASOS sell really good basics. I’ve been buying heaps of button-up shirts and turtlenecks from ASOS recently. I usually spend more money on jackets and accessories because you can get a bit more wear out of those things. I buy most of my shoes off the Nike website or Hype.

MY BIGGEST FASHION MISTAKE WAS… I had a really cringe stage in high school when I had a side fringe and wore emo stuff from Jay Jays. Back when Jay Jays was poppin’. It’s not cool anymore, but back in my day I would wear bright coloured skinny jeans and an Adventure Time top. I would wipe that from my memory if I could.

WHEN I WAS A KID I WORE… My mum dressed me in wacky clothing. I still hate corduroy because my mum made me wear it. I just don’t like the feeling of it. It has sort of come back in style and I hate it. I see pictures of myself as a kid, and my mum has dressed me in white jeans, a white button-up shirt and a floral vest. Who did she think I was… Usher? As soon as I had money, I could finally dress myself and not feel like an idiot. That’s when I really got into fashion.

I WOULD NEVER BE CAUGHT DEAD IN surfwear. You’re never going to catch me in board shorts or thongs. I hate surfwear, it’s disgusting. I’m not a beach person. I hate sand and I hate the beach. I wear sneakers to the beach.
